  1. Red Brigades (BR)

  3. Description 
  4. Formed in 1969, the Marxist-Leninist BR seeks to create a revolutionary 
  5. state through armed struggle and to separate Italy from the Western 
  6. Alliance.  In 1984 split into two factions: the Communist Combatant Party 
  7. (BR-PCC) and the Union of Combatant Communists (BR-UCC).

  9. Activities 
  10. Original group concentrated on assassination and kidnapping of Italian 
  11. Government and private-sector targets; it murdered former Prime Minister 
  12. Aldo Moro in 1978, kidnapped US Army BGen. James Dozier in 1981, and claimed 
  13. responsibility for murdering Leamon Hunt, US chief of the Sinai 
  14.

  16. Multinational Force and Observer Group, in 1984.  The group had been largely 
  17. inactive since Italian and French authorities arrested many of its members 
  18. in 1989.

  21. Probably fewer than 50, plus an unknown number of supporters.

  23. Location/Area of Operation 
  24. Based and operates in Italy.  Some members probably living clandestinely in 
  25. other European countries.

  28. Currently unknown; original group apparently was self-sustaining but 
  29. probably received weapons from other Western European terrorist groups and 
  30. from the PLO.
